Collection includes material pertaining to commercial problems during the War of 1812; fragmentary records of the cotton factorage business of Fraser and Thompson; information on cotton sales for Frederick Fraser by his nephew Joseph August Winthrop of Charleston; references to Sea Island cotton and to a large Russian contract for cloth; and a letter from Iredell Jones, a cousin, concerning his trial as a member of the Ku Klux Klan, 1872. A scrapbook (152 p.) contains miscellaneous material on the De Saussure and many other South Carolina families and on social life in South Carolina and the Confederacy. Also includes letters from Henry De Saussure Fraser, a C.S.A. surgeon in Virginia, commenting on life as a Union prisoner, 1863-1864, at Fort McHenry and Old Capitol Prison and hopes of escape, military activities and anticipation of British intervention, and depredations on the Army of the Potomac. Later letters describe the Charleston earthquake of 1886. Included also is a small notebook of De Saussure family genealogy. Persons mentioned in the collection include Thomas Boone Fraser, Sr., Daniel De Saussure, and Henry William De Saussure.

Hillsborough, N.C. native, son of Colonel Cadwallader Jones and Annie Isabella Iredell, daughter of N.C. governor James Iredell. Jones spent his youth in Hillsborough, and on family holdings near Rock Hill, S.C.
